How to Maintain a Low-Sugar Diet

Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t enjoy munching on sugary treats? Growing up, we are fond of eating candies and cakes to satisfy our sweet tooth. As we grow older, however, we become increasingly aware of the risks of consuming too much sugar. It comes to a point that we will have to eschew sugar altogether just to keep ourselves healthy.

Then again, sugar is still a vital component in maintaining our bodies’ metabolism. We need it to provide food for our cells. That being said, it’s important that we keep our sugar intake to a minimum. We need just about enough of it to nourish worn-out cells without increasing any health risks in the process.

Let’s look at a few things to consider when it comes to maintaining a healthy sugar diet.

  1. Eat whole grains

What do you usually have for breakfast? No doubt, you might be munching on some white bread or sugar-frosted cereals. No matter how much of a kick-start you need to get through the day, you have to consider the amount of sugar that these food contain. Still, if you are accustomed to having bread or cereals every morning, you might want to swap these with high-fiber, whole grain alternatives. Though cheaper, these items can provide you with the energy you need for the day without, of course, the added risks.

  1. Visit the right experts

A dietician is basically a health professional who specializes in suggesting diet regimens based on your needs. If you’re planning to cut your sugar intake by a significant amount, a dietician can suggest diets that work best based on your physique as well as your overall health goals. On the other hand, your personal physician can help in providing diabetic health education and advice on the kind of diets that are right for you.

  1. Go Green

Going back to your diet regimen, your daily meals should include healthy portions of green vegetables. Spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, and other greens can supply your body with ample nourishment, allowing you to keep your cells healthy. Plus, the right choice of vegetables contain natural sugars which can offset the energy lost by cutting out manufactured sugar products.

  1. Drink low-calorie beverages

If you’re always thirsty for soda, it’s a good idea not to rely too much on sugary drinks for a daily fix of thirst-quenching goodness. That being said, you might want to drink pure fruit juices instead. Lemon juice, apart from having a refreshing taste, can help in detoxifying your body and eliminating any excess sugar that remains in your bloodstream. So, make sure to prepare a puree of fruit. Be sure not to put any sugar in your drink. For sure, it will taste just as great as is.

  1. Use artificial sweeteners

Having a sweet tooth can be troublesome, especially for people who grew up eating a lot of sugary treats. If you belong to this crowd and you want to make the change for the better, you might want to start by using artificial sweeteners such as stevia. These will help you safely transition to a less sugar-dependent lifestyle.
