Although June is doing its best to help us forget, summer has actually started. It is the hottest day of the year here today in the UK. At some point or other, the dark grey clouds and continuous rain should subside in favour of blue skies and glorious sunshine. At this point, it’s officially time to don the summer wardrobe – the question is: are you prepared?
If the answer is no, don’t worry. With plenty of guys out there still leaving the holiday shopping until the day before flying, now is as good a time as any to let you know about four key pieces of fashion advice for the coming months.
Bag it Up
Naturally, if you’re off on your jollies, you need something to put all your stuff in. For a long time now, good quality and stylish weekend bag have been a staple of the fashionable gentleman’s wardrobe, but there’s more than that to bags this summer.
Whilst the small shoulder bag/bum bag around the shoulder look is likely to set to continue into the summer and beyond, head on over to the catwalks and you’ll find that the handbag is next in line for men’s high fashion. That’s right, handbags, purses, whatever you want to call them, major brands like Versace, Dior, and Louis Vuitton are all pushing the handheld look.
Whatever you choose to go with, make sure you’re storing in style this summer.
Who Wears Short Shorts?
The answer, this summer, is you. ‘Ultra-short-shorts’, ie. shorts that cut above the mid-thigh, have been scattered through summer fashion shows. From smartly tailored numbers through to loud tie-dye prints, it appears length is more important than print this year when it comes to bearing your legs.
Admittedly, not everyone is going to feel comfortable in a super short pair, but if you’re willing to give it a try, you’ll find plenty of options out there over the next few months.
Stay Cool with Linen
What does it mean to be British and on holiday? On a personal level, it usually means trying to avoid being burnt to a crisp and sweating through everything you’ve brought with you. Once the hotter days arrive, it’s important you’re ready to face them, and one of the best materials to do that with is linen.
The linen shirt is a bit of a classic. A no-frills, stylish design, a light feel and a material that always sits well on your frame, linen offers both an aesthetic and practical solution. Orvis do a great selection of laid-back linen shirts that are tailor made for summer, so you can stay cool on more than one front in the sun.
Sage is all the Rage
If you’re looking for direction with colour, the main one coming out of the major fashion houses for summer is sage. For anyone wondering, sage is a sort of darker olive drab, perhaps a shade or two up from traditional military green.
Other colours, like fluoro lime, have also made an appearance, but that’s not quite as easy a colour to wear. Featuring across everything from sportswear to smart tailoring, sage is the colour you want to be investing in if you want to impress the fashionistas over the next few months.
Hopefully, the sunshine and warm weather aren’t too far away. In the meantime, these tips can help you build your wardrobe for when the time finally does come to show a bit of skin.
